MKC WHITETAIL - GREY

I needed a new hunting knife after this last season and did some shopping around from various different knife manufacturers, big and small. Nothing had everything feature I wanted except for the MKC Whitetail. Once the PVD version was available I put my order in before the email notification saying they were in-stock even hit my inbox and got a second one for my friend. Took about one week for delivery.

First impressions are: it is much light than I anticipated, which is awesome, and I wish there was about 1/4" to 1/2" more jimping on it as I have large hands.

I wish deer season wasn't eight months away to see how it performs when field dressing but I'm very excited to take it into the field this winter.

I’m leaving a 5 star review. However, for MKC’s standards, I’ll say it’s a 4 star knife here.

The ergonomics in the handle near the blade seemed a little bulky, so I filed the G10 handles down a bit, like the Stubhorn and Flattail. Friends who handled the modified knife enthusiastically gave me feedback, preferring this alteration over the stock grip, as I did.

The sharpening choil is also deep and angled enough so whatever you may be cutting may get stuck in it. Until you shave off that amount of metal to make it flush with the choil.. probably won’t need to sharpen it that much in my lifetime.

Also, even though the blade thickness is .135”, it’s thinner at the tip compared to some of the other MKC models with thinner listed blade lengths.

Now, all this being said, it’s in my EDC rotation, and I really like carrying and using it. The handle feels great in the hand, the jimping on the spine of the blade and the butt of the handle is superb, and the PVD food-safe coating sold this whitetail for me to use for everything I need, from bushcraft, to hunting, to picnics and impromptu (or planned) food prep, to opening packages, to gardening.

Definitely a lifetime blade.

One note for MKC from this customer:

If you made a sharpening choil on this whitetail like the Mule Deer knife you came out with, and like White River Knives Ursus models, ~ the ‘forward swept’ sharpening choils, I’d carry it a lot more. I’m curious what the deep sharpening choil design choice is for, aside…

Absolutely love this blade has to be one of my favorite MKC knives, useful from the field to the kitchen. Blade feels awesome in hand and makes field dressing a dream. As always the guys at MKC made the blade scary sharp and after cleaning multiple critters still scary sharp. You won’t regret buying on of these bad boys!
