Heritage
The Arrowhead
History of the MKC Arrowhead
The MKC arrowhead is a mark of purpose. It represents precision, resilience, and a deep connection to the land that defines Montana Knife Company. Inspired by traditional tools built for survival, the form reflects utility over excess, where every line has intent. It signals a mindset rooted in self-reliance, craftsmanship, and respect for the outdoors. More than a logo, it's a symbol of those who rely on their tools and demand they perform without compromise.

Decades of Mastery
Three Decades. One Pursuit

1993
The Spark
At just 11 years old in Lincoln, Montana, Josh Smith forged his first blade under the guidance of his baseball coach, master bladesmith Rick Dunkerley. What started as curiosity quickly became obsession.

1996
Early Greatness
Josh passes his Journeyman Bladesmith test. Talent is no longer potential. It's proven.

2000
Master Bladesmith
At the early age of 19 Josh becomes the youngest Master Bladesmith in knife making history. Precision, Discipline, and the standards are locked in.

2005
Rising In Ranks
Josh starts to become one of the most sought after knife makers in the world. He became known for his expertise in Damascus steel.

2010
Raising the bar on the Liner Lock
Josh begins to push the level of custom precision on his own liner locks and starts to build a reputation as one of the top custom folder knife Master Bladesmiths.

2015
Rising from the Ashes
Josh lost everything. His house burned down, freshly divorced and down to his last penny. Right after this is when he knew it was time to start MKC. He had nothing to lose.

2020
The Beginning of MKC
The official beginning of modern-day MKC. The website launched in July 2020, Brandon Horoho joined as Co-Founder and CMO, and we had our very first drop that December. On December 31st, Josh went all in by quitting his lineman job and betting everything on MKC. The boats were burned, no going back now. We spent the next 2 years building knives in a 2 car garage with wood fire heat and porta potties as rest rooms.

2022
The MKC 2.0 Building
Located in Josh's horse pasture, we broke ground on the 10,000-square-foot MKC 2.0 shop. At the time, we believed this building would carry us through the next five years as we learned how to scale mass manufacturing. Little did we know, we would outgrow it in just one year.

2026
Building the 51,000 Square Foot Factory
After opening our new high-tech 51,000 sqft. engineering and manufacturing facility (3.0), the time had come to release the first folding knife in brand history. Three decades of iteration lead to a refined liner-lock system built for strength, precision, and everyday reliability.
