When Master Bladesmith Josh Smith founded Montana Knife Company, he was already thirty years into making custom liner locks by hand. These kinds of customs sell for ten to thirty thousand dollars apiece.

The Montana is the first folder Josh has built at production scale, with a team of engineers and machinists who could match what he does on the bench.

With an overall length of 7 5/8", the Montana is an EDC liner lock built around a hardened stainless pivot, custom bronze-cage bearings on silicon nitride balls, and a full flat grind MagnaCut blade taken to the thinnest edge we’ve ever ground. The liners run harder than the category standard, extend the handle’s full length, and feed blade load into compression rather than bending. When closed, it measures only 4.31" and has a handle thickness of 0.45", making it fit into any pocket seamlessly.

G10 scales with a 3D-milled micro-texture. Titanium hardware. A custom deep-carry clip with flat-head screws set flush.

The blade goes back into the mill after heat treatment for its most critical surfaces. That’s the kind of step nobody else takes. That same standard applies to every part of The Montana from start to finish.

THE MONTANA LINER LOCK

performance in every detail

MKC PRECISION INSET LINER LOCK

30 years of experience, compiled into one single lock mechanism.

Most liner locks flex under load. The Montana’s was built to get stronger under pressure, not weaker, with forces running through the most supported part of the frame. Harder liners (2 to 4 points above industry standard), a hardened stainless ground pivot, and a lock face geometry refined through more iterations than any other component on this knife.

The result is a lock that does its job and gets out of your way.

CUSTOM BALL-BEARING ACTION

Smooth and buttery on the open. Crisp detent. Lockup you can feel.

The oversized silicon nitride ball bearings contained in a bronze cage create a more rigid, stable feel than any folder on the market. The thumb stud is machined into the blade after hardening. That’s one of the most difficult operations on the entire knife, and it’s one of the last we perform so the parts you interact with most are the most precise.

When the blade isn’t supposed to move, it doesn’t. Open, closed, locked: every position feels intentional.

TRAILING POINT STONEWASH MAGNACUT STEEL BLADE

A blade shape rooted in Josh’s custom heritage, built for precision EDC work.

The trailing point pays homage to what Josh has traditionally made by hand for over three decades.

The trailing point, paired with the same signature upsweep that made the Speedgoat a fan favorite, gives the Montana a blade profile that’s distinctly MKC. With a weight of less than an ounce, and a stonewash finish, the blade features surgical tip built for detail work, controlled cuts, and the kind of precision tasks you expect an EDC to handle.

THE SLICIEST EDGE WE’VE EVER GROUND

Full flat grind MagnaCut, ground to 10 thousandths of an inch.

Developed by metallurgist Larrin Thomas, PhD, MagnaCut gives you the best of both worlds: edge retention and toughness without the trade-offs you’d expect from stainless steel.

The Montana’s full flat grind produces the thinnest edge we’ve ever put on a blade, ground thinner than even the Mini Speedgoat. Opening packages, cutting cord, and slicing through zip ties is effortless. This is the sharpest blade geometry MKC has produced.

the ultimate edc

durability to outlast

FULLY 3D-MILLED G10 HANDLE

Deceivingly thin. Fully contoured. Built to disappear in your pocket and lock into your grip.

The bulletproof G10 scales sit over full-length stainless steel liners, giving you rigidity through the entire frame.

We 3D-milled the handle with curvature in both directions, then milled micro-texture back in. There’s enough grip to hold in wet or sweaty conditions without the risk of snagging fabric. G10 won’t crack, warp, or degrade over time, and all hardware is titanium.

Every detail in the handle is intentional. Even the inlaid arrowhead, a nod to our deep ties to archery, hides a structural screw that cinches the liner to the handle for added rigidity.

DEEP CARRY POCKET CLIP

Easy in. Easy out. Nothing catches or bunches.

The Montana’s fold-over deep carry clip sits in the sweet spot: not too long, not too short. Made from 420 Stainless steel, it keeps weight light, and maintains durability. We used flat head screws with countersunk holes so everything sits flush with the handle. Unlike the round-head hardware most companies reuse from other parts of the assembly, our clip screws won’t wear out or bunch up fabric under the clip. The clip also features the MKC Arrowhead inspired by traditional tools of self-reliance and craftsmanship.

    THE MONTANA - UNRIVALED PERFECTION

The Montana is the third knife that I have purchased from MKC and it has far exceeded every expectation that I had. It has an exceptionally lightweight design, robust arrowhead pocket clip to prevent displacement, requires very little effort to open/close the blade, and I can not forget to mention the intricate and beautiful detail that the engineers took to place the Montanan Knife Company logo on the pivot screw. Unrivaled perfection.

You will not find a better quality product anywhere.

Thank you for the five stars on The Montana, Kurtis! We're absolutely blown away by your incredible feedback and that "unrivaled perfection" sentiment - there's no higher praise than knowing this third MKC knife has exceeded every expectation you had.

It's fantastic that you're experiencing that exceptional lightweight design and robust arrowhead pocket clip working exactly as intended. We put a lot of engineering into getting that balance just right between strength and everyday carry comfort, so knowing it's preventing displacement while staying so manageable really makes our day.

Your appreciation for that effortless open and close action means everything to us. We're passionate about getting that pivot mechanism dialed in perfectly, and hearing that smooth operation is coming through is exactly what we were going for with The Montana.

We're especially thrilled that you noticed the intricate detail work on the pivot screw logo! Those finishing touches are where our craftsmen really get to show their pride in the work, so having a customer who truly appreciates that level of attention to detail keeps us motivated to maintain those high standards every single day.

    The Montana

It really is the pocket knife perfected.

Smooth and strong opening and locking mechanism.

The blade stays sharp for a long time (as magnacut is known for).

Really no complaints. 10/10 with this one.

The price at first was hard to swallow, however when you realize how much time, effort and work went into this, and the fact that is is 100% made in America, it is definitely worth it!

    This'll get passed on!

I was raised in the sort of time when a boy’s pockets held three things of consequence: a bit of string, something his mother hoped he wouldn’t lose, and a pocketknife. Men carried them too, of course, and used them as naturally as they used their hands. When a fellow took out his knife, there was always that small pause while everyone nearby gave it a look. The verdict was simple and final: either someone said, “Nice knife,” or no one said anything at all.

I waited a long while for MKC to make a pocketknife, and I’ll admit I take a quiet pleasure in bringing this one out where it can be seen. The sad truth is that men don’t notice such tools the way they once did. But I notice. I have always believed there is a particular satisfaction in carrying a good working knife, one that feels like it belongs there. I own four or five MKC belt knives and admire every one of them, but age has made returning a knife to a sheath less graceful than it used to be. This pocketknife solves that problem neatly.

I put off writing this review because a tool ought to earn its praise the honest way: by doing its work for a while. I live on a farm in northern Minnesota, where a knife is not an accessory but a daily companion, asked to cut, pry, scrape, open, trim, and generally make itself useful in weather that has little interest in comfort. Most of the knives I have carried were not cheap, but many of them lost their edge sooner than they should have, and before long the dust, rain, cold, and…

Thank you for the beautiful 5 star review on The Montana, Scott! Your words capture exactly what we hoped this knife would become - a true daily companion that earns its place through honest work. We're honored that The Montana has proven itself on your Minnesota farm and that it's living up to the legacy of quality tools that get passed down through generations. There's something special about a knife that works "like a good dog" and still feels smooth after all those daily tasks. We appreciate you taking the time to let it earn its praise the right way before sharing your thoughts!

    Father’s Day Gift

I was so happy to snag a Montana on the first release. My dad wanted one in the worst of ways and he was beyond impressed with it. As the owner of a cnc machine shop I’m very impressed with the fit and finish as well as the overall quality of the Montana. Good work guys! You nailed it!!!

Coming from someone who owns a CNC machine shop, your feedback on the fit and finish means everything to us. We know you have an expert eye for quality craftsmanship, so hearing that praise from someone who truly understands the manufacturing process really makes our day.

We're just grateful we could help you make your dad's day and that The Montana is living up to both of your expectations. Here's to many years of great use!

    A First and a Best

I count myself as one of the LUCKY. I have a MKC Montana folding knife. My son-in-law also tried to buy a Montana with no luck. He claimed he was right there as it went live. (So was I) but it sold out quicker than he could process his order. Shame because it is a jewel! It is light, locks up like a fine vehicle and is MKC scalpel sharp! It feels perfect in the hand and gives no reason not to carry it everywhere, everyday. MKC waited a long time to produce a folder but man, when they finally gave the go; it was ready. It is so right!!!I love my MKC knives and this folder lives up to the example of its siblings. Thanks MKC for another winner!!

Thank you for the five stars on The Montana, Thomas! We're absolutely thrilled to hear you feel like one of the lucky ones - and honestly, you really are! It means the world to us that it's living up to all your expectations.

You're spot on about that lockup and scalpel sharpness - we waited a long time to get into the folder game because we wanted to make absolutely sure we got it right. Hearing that it feels perfect in your hand and earns that everyday carry spot really makes our day.

We completely understand the frustration with availability, and we genuinely feel for your son-in-law missing out. Those drops do go lightning fast, and we're constantly working to find ways to get more of these into the hands of everyone who wants them.

It's fantastic that The Montana is living up to the standard of your other MKC knives - that's exactly what we were shooting for when we finally decided to take the plunge into folders. Here's to many years of great use with your Montana!
