Before founding MKC, Josh Smith spent 10 years as a lineman. He’d work the lines, strip and connect wire, and watch countless $30 knives chip, dull, and disappear off bucket trucks. When Josh started sharpening his crew’s disposable blades, they complained they were “too sharp”… until they realized how much effort they’d been wasting with dull edges.

This gave Josh an idea: What if linemen had a wire-skinning knife that was actually worth a damn? The Great Falls Skinner is that knife.

Born from Josh’s 10 years as a lineman, crafted with MKC’s uncompromising standards, and named for Great Falls, Montana, which you may have heard dubbed “the Electric City” for its hydroelectric dams, the Great Falls Skinner is the first premium wire skinning knife designed for professionals who refuse to treat their tools as disposable. This functional companion works as hard as you do, shift after shift, year after year.

MAGNACUT STAINLESS STEEL

REFINED HAWKBILL BLADE

Less hook, more control. Josh redesigned the traditional wire-skinning blade based on 10 years of field experience.

The Great Falls Skinner features a more gradual curve and a pointier tip compared to standard wire-skinning blades. This refined geometry allows linemen to whip the blade around wire and slide sheathing off effortlessly. At 0.100″ thick, it maintains the proven thickness of professional-grade skinning knives and delivers superior cutting performance.

MAGNACUT STAINLESS STEEL WITH STONEWASH FINISH

Finally, a wire-skinning knife that stays sharp through an entire shift.

While others settle for soft 440A steel that dulls before lunch, the Great Falls Skinner features premium MagnaCut stainless steel. MagnaCut delivers exceptional edge retention when cutting through tough rubber and plastic sheathing all day long.

Unlike the disposable knives that arrive dull from the factory, the Great Falls Skinner comes razor sharp and stays that way. And when it finally needs touching up, MagnaCut sharpens easily.

Learn more about MagnaCut stainless steel from its creator, Larrin Thomas.

SQAURED G10 HANDLE

Oversized and squared off for positive grip with heavy work gloves.

The G10 handle’s squared profile prevents the Great Falls Skinner from twisting or turning in your hand during use. While holding true MKC’s signature style elements, the handle is intentionally oversized to accommodate thick rubber gloves. A massive forward guard keeps your hand where it belongs, protecting you from sliding forward onto the blade.

SHOTGUN RING AND SCRAPING NOTCH

Connect to hot sticks for remote cutting. Scrape corrosion for clean connections.

The rear ring connects to hot sticks (shotgun tools) for safely cutting wire sheathing from a distance. It also serves as a hanging point for belt carry or bucket truck storage. A dedicated notch on the blade’s spine scrapes corrosion off copper wire, which guarantees clean electrical connections… an important detail for reliable line work.

WARNING: This knife is NOT dielectric and all safety precautions should be taken.  Never work with energized wire without properly rated and tested rubber gloves!

EXCLUSIVE MKC KYDEX SHEATH

Custom sheath with a tool loop attachment

Each Great Falls Skinner comes with a custom Kydex sheath featuring a loop for secure attachment to tool belts or carabiners. The sheath provides secure retention while working, though many linemen prefer to keep the knife hanging unsheathed for quick access during active use. It’s built for the realities of line work, not idealized safety protocols.

    Time behind the knife

Wanted to get some time behind the knife before I wrote a review. Purchased knife in October 2025 we are now approaching February 2026. Knife does everything I ask it to do and then some. I mostly use it on primary cable prep. It’s a conversation starter as well. When guys ask me “who makes that knife?” I am proud to say “Montana Knife Company!” Josh Smith thank you for putting out this knife even though it’s a niche market for this style of blade! The rest of the MKC team from engineering to the guy that sweeps the floor and everyone in between, Congratulations on a successful move! Stay focused work safely!

    Work Horse

Wanted to get fair amount of time behind the knife before I did a review. That being said it is a work horse no doubt. The handle is long enough for a good grip and all the leverage you would need to do the work we do. I didn’t use the hot stick feature yet because the job site I work at doesn’t require it. I’m sure I’ll have a chance in the future. The blade has held up amazingly. The edge hasn’t been touched up since I took it out of the box in October. Magna Cut S.S. is awesome! The tip works with surgical precision when it comes time to do splicing or anything else that would require finesse. If you work in the trades I would say buy it, it’ll make your work so much more efficient. Be careful when you use it for the first time cause it is sharp! I speak from experience! I purchased the hunter orange option cause admittedly I’m one to leave tools behind. It’s always on my belt or my harness. Josh Smith thank you for even thinking of putting out a knife like this. I know it’s a “niche” market for this style of blade so Thank You again. The rest of MKC team thank you for bringing this knife to fruition, everyone from engineering to packaging your work doesn’t go unnoticed in my eyes. I will do my part and keep using it everyday and as long as I don’t leave it behind I hope to retire with it on my belt. Stay focused and work safely!

Wow Rodney, what an incredible review! Love hearing how the Great Falls Skinner has become such a workhorse for you in the trades. That's exactly what we designed it for! So cool that the blade has held its edge since October - MagnaCut steel really is something special. And you're spot on about that surgical precision for splicing work - that's the kind of versatility we were going for. Smart choice going with the hunter orange too - we totally get how easy it is to set tools down on a job site! Really appreciate you taking the time to give it a proper test before reviewing, and thanks for the shoutout to Josh and the whole MKC team. Means the world to us knowing it's making your work more efficient. Here's to many more years of that knife serving you well - hopefully all the way to retirement! Stay safe out there!

    Tool use

Hearing MKC talk about using their knives as tools spoke to me so I thought I would take a chance on this one. I have been installing field tile for 25 years and almost exclusively use hawkbills. I have used hawkbills from a lot of makers including another American knife company, and a popular tool company. This is my first magnacut blade. Working in AG I will also skin wire with them, but predominantly use them installing tile.

The kydex sheath is 5/5. Great blade retention, safe knife capture, convenient. I have drawn and resheathed countless times and it is just as good as the first.

The handle is a 4/5. While the handle/knife is comfortable in the hand the grips already have some scratches/gouges and isn't wearing as good as I expected.

The knife blade is a 3/5. I expected better. It is sharp but even in the first day of use I noticed some dings in the blade and it dulled fairly quickly. I am comparing this to another American knife companies made in China blade that has held its edge equally as well.

The tool belt loop is an added bonus. I found it convenient while installing tap tees into the tile main.

For the price, this is just an ok knife compared to other hawkbills. My prior go to cost right around $100. So I expected more from this knife. I can't say I have buyers remorse, but it is not a 5 star knife.

Thank you for four stars Kristofer! We're thrilled to hear that our philosophy about using knives as true tools really resonated with you, and it's awesome to know the Great Falls Skinner has found its way into your field tile installation work after 25 years in the trade - that's exactly the kind of real-world application we design these blades to handle!

It's fantastic that the Kydex sheath is delivering that 5/5 performance with excellent retention and safety through countless draws and resheathing cycles, and we're glad the tool belt loop is proving convenient for your tap tee installations. We put tremendous care into those functional details that make a difference during long work days.

We really appreciate your honest feedback about the handle wear and blade performance. Your experience matters to us, especially coming from someone with your level of expertise using hawkbills across different makers and applications. This kind of detailed insight from professionals who put our gear through demanding daily use helps us continue improving our designs and ensuring we're delivering the value and performance that matches our price point.

Thanks for taking the time to share this thorough feedback about your experience with the Great Falls Skinner in actual field conditions!

    G. F. Skinner (Lineman Knife)

Being a lineman for 39 years I’ve used & sharpened many knives, only having them dull quickly! Now a Brother Lineman , Josh creates a Heavy Duty/BadAss Skinner that is sharp as hell & holds up so well. Much thought went into this knife & I can’t brag on it enough! Congratulations Brother on another successful knife! Dennis /⚡️Powerman⚡️

Dennis, that's amazing to hear from a 39-year veteran lineman! Really means the world to us that a Brother in the trade is putting the Great Falls Skinner to work and loving how it holds its edge. Josh definitely put a lot of thought into creating a knife that could handle the demands of real work, and hearing it's living up to that standard from someone with your experience is incredible. Thanks for the brotherhood support and stay safe out there! ⚡️
